At 4:00 a.m., a fallen tree stopped us on the only road to my son’s 100-mile marathon. It wasn’t just a trunk in the way—it was a moment that made me look again at what causes trees to fall, and how often it has more to do with us than with storms.
Later that week, I saw another fallen tree—this time with roots barely a foot deep, surrounded by pavement and shallow soil. One broke from within. The other never stood a chance.
